Hunting

We hunt three different dry rice field locations, depending on the time of the year and where birds are.

We hunt Snows and Specklebelly Geese out of a very comfortable seven-man pit blind.

Your hunting adventure starts at the Granzala’s Restaurant and Hotel,  a four-star hotel restaurant and sports bar. The night before your hunt, you enjoy a fabulous menu, a wide screen TV with your favorite sports team and world class taxidermy from birds to animals.

Your morning wake up call will get you going along with a complementary continental breakfast and coffee. Then you’re off to a very short drive where you will meet your guide and fellow hunters.

The guide will introduce everyone to one another, check licenses, and complete any unfinished paperwork. You will then be briefed on hunting conditions, weather conditions, and what to expect the day of your hunt

It’s now off for a short drive to the parking lot next to the field where you’ll have time to put on your camo and gear and grab any last minute things. You will have a short walk to the pit

Safety is our number one priority at Blakes Guide Service and you’ll be part of a very intensive safety briefing. We will brief you on sector shooting, amongst other important safety protocols. It is imperative that everyone fully understands the Safety aspect of this hunt.

This is our 36th year hunting in the Sacramento Valley with no accidents at all. This is a record we are not looking to break!

Depending on weather conditions and bird traffic, we will break for lunch around 1 PM. We then return to the field for an afternoon hunt, depending on conditions. After your hunt, we will return to the parking lot where we will take photos, and split up birds. Bird cleaning is available in Colusa just 15 minutes away.

Weather is a key factor for success! If we have a clear bluebird day our hunting will be less than optimal. The more turbulent the weather the better the hunting will be!
